Can You Crack It? That Forgotten Dutch Invention That Shaped our Modern Globe
There are many candidates for the title of “planet’s most significant invention.” The wheel. The printing press. The combustion motor.
As per a recent publication, though, that honor belongs to the mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised cutting, building a modest trading ship necessitated approximately 10 sawyers working for three months,” writes the author. “Using wind-powered sawmills, the same quantity of processed timber might be manufactured within a week.”
Owing to their rapid mechanical cutter, which turned timber to planks with virtually no manual labor, the Dutch were able to construct ships faster compared to any other nation, an advantage that sparked one hundred years of Netherlands maritime, economic as well as cultural supremacy across the continent and the world.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Machine
Corneliszoon’s sawmill, contends the writer, was “humanity’s initial authentic industrial machine.” A windmill rotated a gear. A single part transformed its circular movement into up-and-down motion to power the saw. A separate mechanism transformed the spinning movement into a lateral motion advancing the timber toward the cutter. A ratchet system moved the log forward a measured step per cycle.
“Each element seemed modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s genius was to combine them so the machine operated within a perfectly controlled sequence, sawing on every descending motion and moving on every return motion. This constituted an astonishingly clever use of basic parts.”
