France to begin stopping migrant vessels in Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the UK.
This policy shift comes after the British leader sent a letter to the President urging him to back the initiative and saying there currently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've collected their passengers, according to official statements.
French authorities have rarely acted to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both officers and civilians.
"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police representative states personnel will start intervening at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.
Significantly, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential method to snarl the engines of the boats.
The decision to take action at all is a major advancement, coming after a brief shift towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the previous government official departed from government.
This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were observed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a boat.
Currently French authorities will again be permitted to intercept boats before they pick up migrant passengers from the beaches of northern France, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently delaying the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for methods to adjust to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
