The megacity Wakes Up to Dangerous Smog Following Festival of Lights
On Tuesday morning citizens of the world's most polluted city were faced with breathing severely hazardous air that registered in the "critical" level.
Alarming Air Quality Measurements
Several parts of Delhi recorded an air quality index over 500, which equals 10x the healthy limit set by the global health authority.
Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1,800, equating to fifteen to twenty times exceeding healthy levels.
Firecracker Restrictions and Recent Policy Shifts
Since 2020, authorities had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that engulfs the capital as colder weather begins.
Nevertheless earlier this year, the newly elected regional government approached the judicial authority to seek a easing of the restrictions.
Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously criticized by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and environment".

Alarmingly severe levels of atmospheric toxins in the capital have remained as a major challenge for over a decade and a half, with the problem showing no improvement.
Around celebratory seasons, the concentration of hazardous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been found to shoot up to 70% higher the peak readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was formerly considered as the world's most polluted urban center.
Various Pollution Contributors
The problem in Delhi is attributed to a mix of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, development work, rubbish burning and pollutants from agricultural fires in nearby areas of farming communities.
Within these states, farmers regularly set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, generating dangerous smog that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as colder air sets in.
Public Health and Financial Toll
The economic and health toll on the nearly 33 million inhabitants residing in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to numerous investigations.
These hazardous conditions leads to elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can potentially cause malignancies.
The pollution is calculated to be responsible for ten thousand early fatalities per year in the capital.
